Miki Moto is a Japanese company, which grows cultured
pearls of very high quality.

Cultured Pearls are created by artificially inserting
a small sphere made from pearlite (the pearly
coating on the inside of a shell), into the Oyster
so that it irritates the Oyster. The Oyster then
coats this irritant with more pearlite in order to
protect itself. The smaller the irritant sphere,
the longer it takes for a pearl to grow to any size.
Cheap cultured pearls start with a large sphere,
while expensive cultured pearls start with small
spheres. As an example, Miki Moto cultured Pearls
take three years to grow to about 3 mm in diameter,
and most of this is deposited by the Oyster.
